  • Joining in on part of route number 1 Coast and Castles Cycle Route, the section between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle-upon-Tyne is quite simply breath-taking. The whole 101 miles offers a plethora of beauty, hugging the Northumberland coastline and continues past some of the North East’s most inspirational and historical sites, nature reserves and Areas of Natural Outstanding Beauty. This 3 day cycle route is definitely a family and friends, site seeing route.

Beginning your cycle trip at Berwick-upon-Tweed, you will journey to the world famous Holy Island of Lindisfarne, a place we recommend you take time to enjoy (A tidal island, we would urge you to check tide times and weather in advance). Other points of interest are the expansive long sandy beaches and the North Sea at Lindisfarne which is home to Natural Nature Reserves, covering a mosaic of internationally important coastal habitats, including intertidal mudflats, rocky shore line, sand dunes and saltmarsh. During the autumn, the skies fill with migratory birds and this area becomes the natural habitat for birds such as the light bellied brent geese who travel from Svarlbard and feed with their young on the rich mudflats.

As you continue on your cycle route, Bamburgh Castle acts as the focal point & back drop to the coastal village of Bamburgh, which has avoided over-development to prevent becoming like other ‘sea side’ villages. Instead, Bamburgh has retained its historic heritage and boasts a delectable village shop selling traditional sweets and locally made ice cream, gift shops, deli, award winning tea room, Bamburgh’s famous butcher R Carter’s & Son’s (one of Rick Steins food hero’s) and plenty of places to eat. But in your exploration of this village, don’t forget to visit the castle, once home to the kings of Northumbria, this iconic castle overlooks the Holy Island and is truly spectacular.

Your cycle route takes you to the fishing village of Seahouses and your first evening away. Beadnell Bay, Dunstanburgh famous for Dunstanburgh Castle and the village of Craster take you into your second day of cycling, you mustn't pedal through this village without sampling the world renowned Craster Kippers!

Self-professed ‘friendliest port’, Amble is your second evening away on your cycle route. This waterfront town overlooks Coquet Island, an RSVP seabird sanctuary and home to a 36,000 puffin bird colony, and to see its full glory, a puffin cruise from the harbour can be taken. Other wildlife, Roseate Terns and Seals, also make their presence known along this shore line. The award winning marina is popular amongst water-sport enthusiasts, sailing, kayaking, power boating and raft building offers hours of aquatic fun.

The following day brings your journey down the coast to Tynemouth, where you should visit the Tynemouth Castle Priory with its 2000 year history - it was once one of the largest fortified areas in England, overlooking the North Sea and the River Tyne, it dominates the headland. Your last leg travels inland to the vibrant city that is Newcastle joined to Gateshead by 7 bridges including the Millenium Foot and Cycle Bridge, the first and only tilting bridge is a spectacular sight day or night. The quays of Newcastle and Gateshead offer stunning sites such as the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Sage-named one of the top five concert halls on the planet.

Firstly, if you need to be transported to the start of the cycle route you’re about to embark, you need to establish where you would like to be collected with your bike & baggage. Also, will this be one point for all or does each of your group require separate collections from different points?

At the end of the ride, we will collect you and your group with bags and take you back to your pre-arranged drop-off point, again this may be one point for the whole group or individual drop-off’s.
