Wylam is a small village in Northumberland about 10 miles west of Newcastle, England. Previously, Wylam was an industrial workplace for collieries and iron works, but it is more famous for being the home & birthplace of George Stephenson, now owned by the National Trust, George Stephenson's house it is nestled on the north bank of the river. George Stephenson, a civil & mechanical engineer was the original ‘father of the railways’ and was responsible for building steam locomotives for the first railways. The Wylam Railway Bridge was built for trains to carry coal across the River Tyne linking in with Walbottle, Newburn and Carlisle. Now, a quaint village it is mainly occupied by residents commuting to Newcastle or Hexham.
