Workington
Workington

Workington is a town, civil parish and port on the west coast of Cumbria, England, at the mouth of the River Derwent. It became a major industrial town after iron ore and coal pits were exploited during the 18th century. It was here Henry Bessemer developed his unique and revolutionary steel making process. Some of the town dates back to Roman times, Roman Forts, Mile-Forts and Watchtowers were erected along the Cumbrian Coast to defend against attacks from Ireland. There are numerous churches here, and until it was re-placed in 1770, St Michael’s church had existed since the 7th century. Other sites to see here are the Helena Thompson Museum, Workington Hall, Jane Pit – a 19th century coal mine built by Henry Curwen and Schoose Farm.
