Sunderland

The City of Sunderland is within Tyne & Wear, in North East England. It saw much devastation by the Norman and Viking raids, but survived and the small fishing port later became producers of salt, by mixing coal, which was prevalent here, and seawater. This then became the basis of the coal export trade, the first major industry of Sunderland which related to the growth of other industries like glass, pottery, rope, salts and ship building – Sunfderland was the UK’s first ship building port. The site of Weremutha is one of the most famous monasteries of Saxon Northumbria, St. Peters Church. Other attractions here are the Empire Theatre and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, National Glass centre and of course Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.
