Hexham, holding the title of best market town, can be found on the River Tyne just 20 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Hexham is literally steeped with historic buildings, Hexham Abbey dates back to the 11th century and other buildings of significance are the Moot Hall and The Old Gaol, the oldest purpose built prison in England. The town has seen its fair share of troubles, being situated close to the English/Scottish border, it suffered the Battle of Hexham and War of the Roses. Robert the Bruce and William Wallace both played a big role in shaping6+ the towns colourful past. Today, Hexham is a tourist attraction for many, The Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham Cinema, The Sele Park and the Wentworth Leisure Centre, all playing a part. Hexham is Eco Cycle Adventures friendly.
