Alston
Alston

Alston is a small town in Cumbria, England on the River South Tyne. High up in the heather-clad Pennine landscape which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,  it is the highest market settlement in the UK sitting at 1000 feet above sea level. The steep, cobbled main street is lined with old stone buildings, some dating back to the 17th century and the Angel pub here is dated 1611. A lead mining industry grew from Alston Moor over four centuries ago from which Alston served the community and families. The Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre, is nearby and documents the lead mining history around this area.
