South Shields
South Shields is a coastal town at the mouth of the River Tyne, England, a few miles downstream from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This seaside port town dates pre-historic and evidence of which can be found at Arbeia , which form part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, a very popular tourist attraction. Throughout the 19th century ship building, coal and glass making became the main production and export of the town and dramatically increased its population to 12,000. South Shields is well- known for Sandhaven beach, Marsden Bay & Frenchman’s Bay, it is also home of the oldest provincial newspaper in the UK, the Shields Gazette. Other attractions include Customs House Theatre & Arts, Souter Lighthouse and is home to Barbour fashion out-let and main office.
